Alicia Kaplan is an award-winning bilingual actress with over 265 credits spanning theater, film, television, and voiceover. Born in Venezuela and based in New York, she has performed internationally in English and Spanish, bringing depth and versatility to both contemporary and classical roles. Her stage work includes performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Repertorio Español, The Public Theater, Gala Theatre, and The Zach Theatre, among many others. Alicia is also the founder and producing artistic director of Danisarte.

Alicia Kaplan, actriz, directora, productora y fundadora de Danisarte, ha dedicado más de 30 años a impulsar el teatro latino en Nueva York. Desde sus inicios en Venezuela hasta su impacto en la escena neoyorquina, su trayectoria es un verdadero legado para el arte. En esta conversación, Alicia nos transporta a sus inicios en el teatro, marcados por la influencia de su familia y su formación en Nueva York. Nos habla de cómo su pasión la llevó a crear Danisarte, un espacio que ha servido de plataforma para artistas hispanos, y de los retos que ha enfrentado como mujer en la escena teatral. Además, reflexiona sobre la evolución del teatro, su incursión en el mundo digital y su profunda conexión con la obra de Federico García Lorca.
Performing Arts Legacy Project: Alicia Kaplan
Alicia Kaplan is a bilingual actress, dancer, director, choreographer, teaching artist, cultural activist, and the Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Danisarte. A lifelong performer, Alicia began acting and dancing at age six in Caracas, Venezuela, training with Nina Novak, Ruth Antonofsky, Maria Swoboda, Luigi, Merce Cunningham, and Uta Hagen.
She has appeared in over 260 productions across the U.S., Latin America, and Spain, spanning theater, television, film, and radio. Her New York debut was in the world premiere of Terrible Angels written by Venezuelan playwright Roman Chalbaud. She has directed over 55 plays and created “Soliluna: A Magical Voyage Through Five Continents”, a bilingual multimedia piece that toured Colombia, Puerto Rico, Spain, and all five boroughs of NYC.
Under her leadership, Danisarte became the first theatrical company to produce a virtual bilingual festival during the pandemic (Lorca Lives / Lorca Vive), and from 2021– 2025, continued presenting Lorca-inspired performances and festivals in NYC. Alicia also produces and hosts the bilingual YouTube series Welcome to My World / Bienvenidos a Mi Mundo, and serves as a foreign correspondent for Argentina’s Alba Grismado Channels.
